Inter-American Model Law 2.0 on Access to Public Information

In 2017, the OAS General Assembly directed the Department of International Law (DIL) to “consult with the focal points of the Inter-American Program on Access to Public Information as well as civil society, to identify the thematic areas that require updates or further development in the Model Inter-American Law on Access to Public Information adopted by the General Assembly in 2010, and to convey the results of this process to the Inter-American Juridical Committee (IAJC) for consideration and further development”.

The consultation process developed by the DIL, which incorporated a gender perspective from its earliest stages, concluded in June 2019. In July of that same year, the DIL, in its capacity as Technical Secretariat of the CJI, submitted for the consideration of said organ a preliminary draft of the Model Inter-American Law on Access to Public Information 2.0.

The CJI discussed said draft in its regular sessions of August 2019 and March 2020 and subsequently approved the Proposal for the Inter-American Model Law on Access to Public Information 2.0, which was then forwarded to the Organization's political bodies for their own consideration.
