Plan of Action of the Social Charter of the Americas
The Social Charter of the Americas was adopted in June 2012 during
the XLII regular session of the General Assembly. Unquestionably, it is
one of the most important documents on social matters in the Hemisphere,
and represents a historic opportunity to place general welfare and
equity as central objectives for public policy of the Member States.
During the General Assembly of the OAS on June 2015, the Plan of Action of the Social Charter was approved in order to
"establish objectives and strategic lines of action in the areas of
employment, social protection, health, food and nutrition, education,
housing and basic public services, and culture in order to contribute,
according to the reality of each member State to achieve the principles,
purposes and priorities contained in the Social Charter of the Americas
"(Art. 2 of the Plan of Action)
The Social Charter and its Plan of Action are the natural complement
of the Inter-American Democratic Charter, and provide guidance to Member
States on progress towards equitable development and full enjoyment of
economic, social, and cultural rights, as well as for the establishment
of public policies.
In this sense, the overall objective is supporting Member States, and
providing follow-up to the mandates arising from the Plan of Action of
the Social Charter.
