Introduction |
|
Trafficking in Firearms has
extremely high human and economic costs in the Americas and is linked to
multiple forms of crime and violence. With a total of 42% of homicides by firearms,
Latin America is in fact the region with the highest level of armed violence in
the world. Against
this background, the DPS has focused on the fight against the
trafficking in firearms as a means to strengthen public security and
promote peace in the region.

The Section against the Illicit Trafficking in
Firearms, Ammunition and Explosives seeks to strengthen the
implementation of the objectives and mandates established by the
Consultative Committee of the Inter-American Convention against the
Illicit Manufacturing of and
Trafficking in Firearms,
Ammunition, Explosives, and Other Related Materials (CIFTA),
through the promotion of multilateral cooperation.
