Second IABIN Council Meeting - January 14-15, 2002, Miami, United States
January 14-15, 2002, Miami, Florida

Fifty-eight participants from 22 countries attended the second Council meeting, which was hosted by the U.S. Geological Survey (Chair of the Council) and the Organization of American States (the Diplomatic Host). Attendees included IABIN Focal Points or their representatives, and participants from inter-governmental, non-governmental and academic organizations (see list of participants). The Council gratefully acknowledges the financial support for the meeting provided by the U.S. Geological Survey, the World Bank, and the Organization of American States (OAS).

The objectives for the meeting included: strengthening IABIN through personal interaction, increasing collaborations among participants, reviewing inter-sessional work, and reaching concurrence on future activities for the short- and mid-term.

While various bodies for discussion and consensus building on IABIN have been formed (the IABIN Council, an Executive Committee, technical working groups, etc.), a secretariat or hub to coordinate network activities remains to be established. Setting up the IABIN hub will require a clear definition of responsibilities, a process to select an institution, and a strategy for it's the hub's financial sustainability.

Lessons learned from other, similar networking initiatives have indicated that a coordinating hub is critical to the successful implementation and maintenance of an information network such as IABIN.
