Trade and Environment in the Americas Seminar

The Seminar aims to train future leaders of developing countries to acquire the tools required to achieve a comprehensive overview of the issues of trade and environment in the context of the sustainable development agenda. Also, at the end of the course participants will have the skills to negotiate and implement international trade agreements that include provisions or have environmental implications with a view to sustainable development.

Design and Implementation of Payment for Ecosystem Services Schemes Seminar

It aims to provide theoretical and practical knowledge on Payments for Environmental Services (PES) to official representatives of civil society and government officials in the countries of the Americas, while providing a tool for conservation policy natural resources at the decision making level, as well as economic and social development in rural areas. The course aims to present the conceptual foundations of environmental economics that support the design of PES mechanisms and to establish a methodology for the design and implementation, which includes PES assessment elements of Environmental Services, biophysical aspects of land use, and institutional framework. During the course, Latin America PES case studies are analyzed in order to assess its effectiveness in environmental and economic as well as its potential to replicate.

Urbanism and Social Governance

The course aims to showcase the process of urban and social transformation as well as governance and community participation from the urban, environmental and social perspective, carried out in recent years. Additionally, the course seeks to understand the geography and its transformation with an encompassing theoretical modules as well as field visits to different city institutions, with the objective of exchanging ideas regarding the management of cities, founded on sustainability and social inclusion.

The workshop seeks to create a vision, from the perspective of young people around the water resources issues, in order to empower them to make proposals to management agencies and decision-making in the countries of the region with regards youth involvement in solving water issues.

Judicial Capacity

The Program seeks to advance the expertise of the Inter-American judiciary in environmental cases. The program will senstize participating judges to the environmental challenges faced by today’s society, providing them with the basic understanding of the principles of environmental law – including ecological responsibility and the rule of law- that are necessary for the judicial decision making process.
