The police is one of the State institutions that is closest to the citizens. In contexts such as the current COVID-19 pandemic, the police have a fundamental role that goes beyond their primary role in preventing crime and violence and controlling crime. Thus, police institutions become one of the first lines of response in emergencies. In these circumstances, the police are more exposed, and it is necessary to consider new protocols that protect the health of the police officers. In many cases, the police in the region faced a substantial reduction in personnel due to illness or the need to remain in quarantine. Furthermore, these crises modify criminal patterns, forcing the police to rethink new challenges both during and after the emergency. For the police in the region, who have limited resources and are overburdened by the situation of violence and crime that affects our countries, the pandemic poses greater challenges. In these circumstances, it is relevant to discuss some of these questions: How does the context of a pandemic impact the police service? What previous preparations did they have and what measures did they have to develop? How were the criminal patterns modified? What challenges are foreseen in the post-pandemic?
