  August 2, 2005

At a meeting this morning with Organization of American States (OAS) Secretary General, José Miguel Insulza, the Greek Permanent Observer to the OAS, Ambassador George Savvaides, presented a check for US$30,000 to support the OAS’ Lecture Series of the Americas as well as the upcoming “Meeting of Government Spokespersons of the OAS Member States,” which will be held in August in Santiago, Chile.

In presenting the contribution, Ambassador Savvaides said that Greece wants to be as supportive as possible in programs that will help the Organization become more active. He added that Greece maintains very close and cordial relations with the countries of the hemisphere, and that “it will use the opportunity of its seat in the UN Security Council to further enhance those relations.”

Secretary General Insulza thanked the Greek Ambassador for what he referred to as “a very timely contribution” and stressed the importance of cooperating in the areas where the OAS can make a significant difference, namely in strengthening human rights, democratic governance and the rule of law. He also highlighted the particular importance of the contribution to the upcoming seminar in Chile, noting that “transparency is key to ensuring democratic governance.”

Also present at the meeting were the Greek Alternate Observer and Political Secretary, Adamadia Klotsa, and Irene Klinger, Director of the Department of Communications and External Relations and Coordinator of the Lecture Series.
