The Organization of American States (OAS) presented a new book for girls and boys on the principles of democracy in commemoration of the twentieth anniversary of the adoption of the Inter-American Democratic Charter.

The Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, said the publication is a demonstration of the Organization's commitment “to build or rebuild more just and peaceful societies with a special focus on those who must lead the cause of building a better future: our youth, beginning with our children.”

The book, entitled “Democracy,” was created by the OAS Department for the Promotion of Peace and covers topics such as elections, freedom of expression, truth, and justice, among others. It was published digitally in Spanish and English and will be available in print shortly. Its main purpose is to join efforts to transform societies through a greater commitment to education.

The Inter-American Democratic Charter was adopted by the OAS member states on September 11, 2001 in Lima, Peru and seeks, among other goals, the strengthening and preservation of democratic institutions in the hemisphere.

The book is available in English and Spanish.
