MEETING OF CONSULTATION OF MINISTERS OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

The Meeting of Consultation of Ministers of Foreign Affairs is held to consider problems of an urgent nature and of common interest to the member states, and to serve as a consultative body.

PERMANENT COUNCIL

The Permanent Council of the OAS reports directly to the General Assembly and has the powers assigned to it by the Charter and other inter-American instruments, as well as the functions entrusted to it by the General Assembly and the Meeting of Consultation of Ministers of Foreign Affairs. INTER-AMERICAN COUNCIL FOR INTEGRAL DEVELOPMENT (CIDI)

CIDI reports directly to the General Assembly, with decision-making power in matters of partnership for integral development.

The Inter-American Juridical Committee serves as an advisory body to the OAS on juridical matters, promotes the progressive development and codification of international law, and studies juridical problems related to the integration of countries for the development of the region.

INTER-AMERICAN COMMISSION ON HUMAN RIGHTS (IACHR)

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) is one of the two organs of the Inter-American system responsible for the promotion and protection of human rights. The other is the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (I/A Court HR).

GENERAL SECRETARIAT

The General Secretariat is the central and permanent organ of the OAS. It exercises the functions assigned to it by the OAS Charter and other inter-American treaties and agreements, and fulfills the mandates entrusted to it by the General Assembly, the Meeting of Consultation of Ministers of Foreign Affairs, and the councils (Permanent Council and Inter-American Council for Integral Development).

SECRETARIATS

The work of the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States is carried out through seven Secretariats, which include: the Secretariat for Strengthening Democracy, the Executive Secretariat for Integral Development, the Secretariat for Multidimensional Security, the Secretariat for Administration and Finance, the Secretariat for Legal Affairs, the Secretariat for Access to Rights and Equity, and the Secretariat for Hemispheric Affairs.

SPECIALIZED CONFERENCES

Specialized Conferences are intergovernmental meetings to address special technical matters or to develop certain aspects of inter-American cooperation and are held when so decided by the General Assembly or the Meeting of Consultation of Ministers of Foreign Affairs, on its own initiative or at the request of any of the councils or specialized organizations.

INTER-AMERICAN COURT OF HUMAN RIGHTS

The Inter-American Court of Human Rights ((I/A Court HR) is an autonomous judicial institution of the OAS whose objective is the application and interpretation of the American Convention on Human Rights. The Court exercises contentious and advisory jurisdiction.

DEFENSE ADVISORY COMMITTEE

The Defense Consultative Committee advises the OAS on matters of military collaboration that may arise in connection with the application of existing special treaties on collective security. It is convened when matters relating to defense against aggression need to be addressed.

INTER-AMERICAN COMMISSIONS

The Inter-American Committees are subsidiary political-technical bodies of CIDI. The purpose of the Inter-American Committees is to provide continuity to the sectoral dialogue on cooperation in a given sector, to follow up on ministerial and Summit of the Americas mandates, and to identify multilateral cooperation initiatives. There are 7 Inter-American Committees: Education, Culture, Science and Technology, Social Development, Sustainable Development, Ports and Tourism. LEARN MORE

INTER-AMERICAN AGENCY FOR COOPERATION AND DEVELOPMENT (IACD)

The Inter-American Agency for Cooperation and Development promotes, coordinates, manages and facilitates the planning and execution of programs, projects and activities of partnership for development.

INTER-AMERICAN DRUG ABUSE CONTROL COMMISSION (CICAD)

CICAD is based on the principles and objectives set forth in the 1986 Inter-American Program of Action of Rio de Janeiro against the Illicit Use, Production and Trafficking of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances, as well as the 1996 Anti-Drug Strategy in the Hemisphere. LEARN MORE

INTER-AMERICAN COMMITTEE AGAINST TERRORISM (CICTE)

CICTE is the regional entity whose purpose is to prevent and combat terrorism in the Americas. CICTE fosters cooperation and dialogue among member states to counter terrorism, in accordance with the principles of the OAS Charter and the Inter-American Convention against Terrorism.

INTER-AMERICAN TELECOMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION (CITEL)

The Inter-American Telecommunications Commission has technical autonomy in the performance of its functions, within the limits set by the Charter of the Organization of American States (OAS), the CITEL statutes and the mandates of the General Assembly. Its mission is to facilitate and promote the sustained development of telecommunications in the hemisphere.

The CIP is a commission of the Inter-American Council for Integral Development (CIDI) whose purpose is to strengthen hemispheric cooperation for the development of the port sector, with the active participation of the private sector.

The CEJA is an intergovernmental entity, with technical and operational autonomy, established by the OAS General Assembly. Its activities are carried out in accordance with the guidelines of the Meetings of Ministers of Justice and Attorneys General of the Americas (REMJA).

The function of the IACNDR is to address problems related to natural disasters and to serve as the main forum of the OAS to analyze this issue in coordination with the competent national organizations.

The IADB provides advice to OAS programs, promotes peace and security in the Hemisphere, builds confidence among the parties through military cooperation ties, and strengthens civil-military relations. It oversees the academic program of the Inter-American Defense College.

The IPGH, headquartered in Mexico, has the mission to support and contribute to the advancement of the sciences within its field of action.

INTER-AMERICAN INDIGENIST INSTITUTE (III)

The Institute was established in 1940 in Patzcuaro, with the function of keeping the reports and archives of the Inter-American Indian Congresses, facilitating the implementation of the resolutions adopted by these Congresses, and supporting the implementation of the Patzcuaro Convention. It manages a historical archive of documents related to the indigenous peoples of the Americas.

INTER-AMERICAN INSTITUTE FOR COOPERATION ON AGRICULTURE (IICA)

IICA is the specialized agricultural agency of the Inter-American System that supports the efforts of the Member States to achieve agricultural development and rural well-being.
