Is PredPol the 'holy grail' of crime prevention or are its secret algorithims targeting civil liberties and minority groups?

Sergeant Charles Coleman popped out of his police SUV and scanned a trash-strewn street popular with the city's homeless, responding to a crime that hadn't yet happened. It wasn't a 911 call that brought the Los Angeles Police Department officer to this spot, but a whirring computer crunching years of crime data to arrive at a prediction: a car theft or burglary would probably occur near here on this particular morning.

Doctors at Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth are experimenting with data technology that could help predict neighborhoods where kids are most likely to be abused.

On Think, guest host Lauren Silverman talked about the forecasting software with Dr. Dyann Daley, a pediatric anesthesiologist at Cook Children's and head of the Center for Prevention of Child Maltreatment. She was also joined by clinical psychologist David Sanders, who chaired the Presidential Commission to Eliminate Child Abuse and Neglect Fatalities.

América Latina y el Caribe es hoy sin duda la región con mayor incidencia de violencia letal en el mundo. Muchos de los países y de las ciudades con mayor tasa de homicidios se localizan en nuestra región. Otro dato aún más alarmante es que, mientras la tendencia global ha sido de reducción de los homicidios en las últimas décadas, América Latina ha seguido el camino inverso. Este escenario es fruto de muchos factores. Uno de ellos es que ni la sociedad ni las políticas públicas le han concedido al tema una importancia a la altura de su gravedad.
