THAILAND OFFERS TRAINING FELLOWSHIPS TO OAS COUNTRIES
November 7, 2003
A new training opportunity has been opened to citizens of Organization of American States (OAS) member countries, thanks to a generous donation by the Royal Government of Thailand. The latest technical training program, announced at OAS headquarters today, covers five areas: Managing a market economy in a globalized world; revitalizing higher education; international trade promotion; tourism management; and international narcotics law enforcement.
The Permanent Observer of Thailand to the OAS, Ambassador Sakthip Krairiksh, formalized the arrangement with Assistant Secretary General Luigi Einaudi during a presentation ceremony at which he explained that the program entails five short-term training courses to be conducted in Thailand next year, under the Professional Development Program.
“This pilot initiative, arranged by the Department of Technical and Economic Cooperation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, is aimed at supporting the human resources development of OAS member countries as well as being a forum to exchange innovative ideas between our peoples,” said the Thai diplomat, who is also Ambassador to the United States.
In thanking the Royal Thai government and the Permanent Observer, Ambassador Einaudi lauded the gesture, noting that human resource development is “extremely important to our member states.” He cited the priority Thailand has placed on such matters as human rights, the rule of law and fighting terrorism, saying the Royal Thai government has set “an important example of how progress can be attained under the rule of law.”
Among those on hand for the brief ceremony were Ronald Scheman, Director General of the Inter-American Agency for Cooperation and Development (IACD), and OAS Director of Fellowships and Training Santos Mahung.
