ELECTORAL OBSERVATION MISSION
NATIONAL ELECTIONS
REPUBLIC OF NICARAGUA-2006
____________________________________________________
Managua, Nicaragua, November 8, 2006
The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Nicaragua congratulates the Nicaraguan people for their exemplary conduct on election day, November 5. It also congratulates Daniel Ortega Saavedra for his electoral victory and wishes him success in the future as he leads the government as President of all Nicaraguans.
The Observation Mission recognizes the authorities of the Supreme Electoral Council, the Executive Branch, the Army and police, as well as all political actors in the process, for the efforts they undertook to guarantee free expression of the popular will and respect for the law. This is a historic moment that consolidates and strengthens the path of peace and institutional renovation in Nicaragua.
The OAS Mission will present a report for the consideration of the Secretary General and the OAS Permanent Council, which will include its conclusions and recommendations for continuing to improve Nicaragua’s electoral system. These are intended to be constructive, along the same lines of impartiality, independence and objectivity with which it carried out its observation efforts.
