OAS Permanent Council Congratulates Argentina for the Peaceful Atmosphere and Success of Its General Elections

  October 26, 2011

The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) congratulated the Government and people of Argentina during today’s regular session for the elections held in the South American country on Sunday, October 23, in which President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner was re-elected for a second consecutive term.

The current Chair of the Council and Permanent Representative of Guyana, Bayney Karran, remarked on the peaceful atmosphere and the successful outcome of the General Elections, which had “overwhelming participation by Argentinean citizens." On behalf of the Council, Ambassador Karran also commended President Fernández de Kirchner for the "overwhelming support received in the vote." In their own speeches, delegates from different member countries also joined in expressing their congratulations.

The Interim Representative of Argentina, Martín Gómez Bustillo, briefed Council members on the development of the electoral process, which in his own words "was held in a peaceful atmosphere,” and through which President Fernandez de Kirchner’s social inclusion model was widely ratified. "In a climate of harmony and renewed hope, the President achieved a broad and historical figure of 54 percent," explained the Argentine diplomat.

In thanking the praise received from the Permanent Representatives for the exemplary and civic elections held on Sunday, Gómez Bustillo remarked on the gesture by Argentine opposition forces "in recognizing the great success of the President and in expressing their willingness to work together to consolidate the model of social inclusion that has been carried out by the government and widely ratified in the polls."
