OAS Becomes Observer Member of the Council of Europe Group against Corruption

  October 21, 2011

The Organization of American States (OAS), through its Mechanism for the Implementation of the Inter-American Convention against Corruption (MESICIC), today became an observer member of the Council of Europe Group against Corruption (Greco).

The admission was made official in Strasbourg, France, during the Fifty-Second Plenary Meeting hosted by the European body, in which 47 States from the Council of Europe, Belarus and the United States take part.

The Secretary General of the OAS, José Miguel Insulza, welcomed the decision and said "the admission will be of great benefit to strengthen ties and build common experiences." "The observer status is a significant step in mutual cooperation to advance the objectives of the anti-corruption mechanisms," he said.

Considered as the consolidation of a long cooperation relationship that has existed between the two organizations, the acceptance as an observer to the OAS will allow it to attend the annual meetings of Greco and develop joint actions to support collaborative member countries of the OAS, and in particular the MESICIC.

The OAS joins a group of observers, among them are the United Nations Organization (UNO), the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe, and the European Committee Legal Council of Europe.

The MESICIC is an intergovernmental instrument established in the framework of the OAS to support states that are part of the implementation of the provisions of the Convention through a process of mutual and equal evaluation, where specific recommendations are made regarding areas where there are gaps or require further progress.

The Group of States against Corruption (Greco) was created in 1999 by the Council of Europe to monitor States' compliance with anti-corruption standards organization.
