OAS Secretary General Sends His Condolences to the Victims of Rains in Central America and Colombia

  October 20, 2011

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today extended his condolences and those of the institution he heads to the governments of Central America and Colombia for the high number of fatal victims and for all those affected by the strong rains that have hit the region, and he reiterated the support the General Secretariat “offers the people and governments of our sister countries at these difficult times of sadness and need.”

The rains have caused the deaths of at least 120 people, left nearly 700,000 victims in Central America and Colombia, and tens of thousands of refugees and isolated villages.

Secretary General Insulza extended to the families of victims in Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, and Colombia, his most heartfelt condolences and offered his support “to overcome this new and hard blow that nature inflicts, and which unfortunately tends to disproportionately affect the most needy.”

The head of the OAS welcomed efforts by the governments of the region that have deployed their forces to control the situation and prevent more deaths. “Situations such as this require not only the quick mobilization of national forces but also of international cooperation, and coordination and support from governments of the region.”
