OAS Assistant Secretary General Praises Plans for Hemispheric Tourism Fund
October 3, 2011
The Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Ambassador Albert Ramdin, has called on governments of the Americas to make tourism a central focus of their economic recovery strategies, and a priority in their national policies.
The high-ranking OAS official has also praised OAS Member States for approving the establishment of a Hemispheric Tourism Fund, geared towards supporting extremely poor communities that are unable to develop tourism potential. The proposal for the Fund was made during the Inter-American Travel Congress, which closed this weekend in El Salvador. According to Ambassador Ramdin, the Fund addresses the issue of poverty in a tangible manner by creating new opportunities to generate income in the face of economic constraints.
“The current global economic downturn and increased competition among tourist destinations requires an assessment of the tourism sectors in the Americas,” said Ramdin. “Incentives, special policies and education initiatives need to be established to involve and include members of marginalized and socially isolated groups, like the indigenous peoples. When approached in a sustainable manner, tourism can help drive economic growth and alleviate poverty,” he added.
In the drive to stimulate tourism, however, the OAS Assistant Secretary General also urged delegates to be mindful of environmentally friendly policies, since the tourism sector is responsible for approximately five percent of the global carbon footprint, and the tourism industry itself is also extremely vulnerable to the fallout of climate change.
OAS Assistant Secretary General Ramdin praised the government of El Salvador for its hosting of the Inter-American Travel Congress and urged countries to take advantage of the mechanisms to coordinate efforts to create an environment for tourism to flourish in the Americas. Ramdin, along with the Minister of Tourism of El Salvador, José Napoleon Duarte, and the Secretary General of the World Tourism Organization, Talib Rifai, closed the Inter-American Travel Congress this weekend in El Salvador.
