OAS Co-organizes Meeting to Prepare for CARICOM - Canada Negotiations

The Organization of American States (OAS), through its Department of Economic Development, Trade and Tourism, is co-organizing from September 12 to 16 a workshop in Barbados with the Office of Trade Negotiations (OTN) of the CARICOM Secretariat. More than 30 trade negotiators from CARICOM countries will meet, as part of a capacity building consultation exercise, to address key issues related to services trade and investment in the context of the CARICOM-Canada trade negotiations.
The CARICOM Technical Working Group on Services and Investment will focus on a number of services sectors of particular importance, such as tourism, culture, ICT, telecoms, e-commerce, and energy services. CARICOM countries will also discuss the nexus between innovation and investment, and address the outstanding issues related to the negotiations.
Canada is CARICOM’s third largest trading partner. Currently, trade and economic relations between CARICOM and Canada are covered under a number of instruments, including CARIBCAN, which grants unilateral duty free access to eligible goods from beneficiary countries in the English-speaking Caribbean up to December 31, 2011.
