OAS Secretary General Meets with President Elect of Peru

  July 6, 2011

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, met today with the President Elect of Peru, Ollanta Humala, in his office in Washington, DC.

During the meeting, the authorities spoke about the current situation in the hemisphere, the good relations between the hemispheric institution and the government of the South American country, and new possibilities for cooperation between the nations of the continent.

At the meeting’s conclusion, the head of the OAS thanked the visit by President Elect Humala and highlighted the important role Peru plays in the multilateral forum of a “very diverse” continent, a region in which “all peoples must be represented in the hemispheric Organization so it may adequately fulfill its functions.”

The President Elect of Peru, for his part, said he shared with Secretary General Insulza “a concern with finding solutions to the region’s problems.” “We also spoke about the integration of the entire American region, the fight against drug trafficking, respect for the Democratic Charter, which is ten years old this year, and how to strengthen the OAS as an institution that brings together all of the American countries,” he added.

Participants at the meeting included Víctor Rico, OAS Secretary for Political Affairs; Alfonso Quiñónez, OAS Secretary for External Relations; and the Chair of the OAS Permanent Council and Permanent Representative of Guatemala to the Organization, Ambassador Jorge Skinner-Klee, among others.
