OAS Calls for More Inclusive Energy Policies in the Americas
April 11, 2011
The Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Albert Ramdin, stated that the 21st century requires an energy revolution which “should be driven by the Americas to secure access to energy for economic growth with equity and social inclusion for our citizens.”
Assistant Secretary General Ramdin, who participated in an OAS Regional Dialogue on Critical Energy and Climate Issues and a meeting of the Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA), stressed the important role played by the Organization of American States in supporting Member States to develop innovative policies aimed at promoting energy sustainability and ensuring better access to such resources by those in more need.
“A competitive and diversified energy portfolio is vital to the development of our domestic industries, for employment and sustainable economic growth”, said Ramdin, who added that “renewable energy can contribute to poverty alleviation in particular during a time of high and unstable oil prices.”
The Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE) has stated that the region needs to pay particular attention to energy efficiency, energy infrastructure, energy poverty and renewable energy.
During the energy dialogue, which gathered energy authorities from more than 20 countries in the Americas to exchange views and explore cooperation on issues regarding energy and climate, Ambassador Ramdin congratulated the Government of Panama on the approval of Panama’s law of incentives for the promotion of wind energy and the restructuring of the National Energy Secretariat.
He further stated that “whether large or small, rich or poor, north or south, our nations must contribute their ideas to set the tone of a new era in energy in the Americas to find new solutions to the old problems of energy security and environmental protection.”
