OAS Stresses Responsible Attitude of All Sectors and Normalcy of the Electoral Process in Peru

  April 11, 2011

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, said that “the Peruvian elections have been a very important step in the consolidation of democracy in the country and the region. The responsible attitude of all sectors was a decisive factor in making election day pass within the framework of normalcy and legality. I congratulate the Peruvian people for the example they have given.”

The Electoral Observation Mission (EOM/OAS) headed by the former Argentine Foreign Minister, Dante Caputo, noted “the high participation in the voting, involving some 85.1 percent of voters according to our information, ratifies the commitment of Peruvian people with democracy.”

Prudence during hours of uncertainty and the speed with which the official counting was transmitted explain in great part the tranquility that characterized election day.

In conducting their work throughout the national territory, the 74 international observers of the EOM/OAS remarked that the set up of tables was delayed though done in an orderly way and with all the required materials, which contributed to the good development of the voting. Similarly, the Mission notes the high presence of women in the makeup of the tables.

The Mission noted the low presence of political party representatives, who were only present in some 70 percent of observed voting tables during the entire process.

The EOM/OAS will continue to cooperate with electoral authorities in the second presidential round of elections.
