OAS Secretary General Congratulates CIM for its Progress against Gender Discrimination

  April 8, 2011

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today greeted the members of the Directive Committee of the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM) in their last day of meetings in Washington, DC and recalled the need to continue to work together to face the problems of violence against women and gender discrimination.

“Our agendas are beginning to have more and more in common and we are focusing our actions on the most fundamental issues, such as political and economic independence, and violence against women. What matters to me is that the CIM be able to encompass all of it and that it collaborate with other international organizations,” the Secretary General said.

Furthermore, the head of the OAS congratulated the CIM for “the rhythm its work has taken” and the success of the First Hemispheric Forum on “Women’s Leadership for a Citizens’ Democracy” that brought together leaders and authorities from the region between April 4-6. Similarly, he recalled the recent conclusion of the 3rd Conference of States Parties to the Follow-up Mechanism for the Implementation of the Convention of Belém do Pará, the results of which “have been enriching.”

In this context, he affirmed the need to expand the mechanisms that allow the OAS and the CIM to verify the fulfillment of the commitments adopted by countries on issues related to violence against women and gender discrimination. “I wish we could have a mechanism like we have in other areas and be able to offer countries that are lagging behind on the matter our cooperation to improve” on subjects of gender, such as women’s political participation, he said.

“But as an International organization we cannot limit ourselves to make denunciations, we must necessarily act to help countries improve their situations,” he concluded.
