OAS Assistant Secretary General Meets with CARICOM Trade Officials

  January 21, 2011

The Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Albert R. Ramdin, met this week with officials from the Office of Trade Negotiations of CARICOM, at his office in Washington, DC, to discuss ways to strengthen relations between Latin America and Caribbean Community.

Ambassador Ramdin met with Ambassador Gail Mathurin, Director General of CARICOM’s office of Trade Negotiations, and Trevor Boothe, Director of Technical Cooperation, to speak about tangible ways to forge stronger trading ties in the region.

Discussions centered on the technical assistance provided to the CARICOM Secretariat through the OAS Department of Trade, in areas of trade negotiations, capacity building and studies on trade. Ambassadors Ramdin and Mathurin also discussed collaboration in support of Haiti and the readiness of the OAS to collaborate with CARICOM in assisting the OAS and CARICOM Member States.

According to Assistant Secretary General Ramdin, “It is a mandate of the Organization of American States to foster and assist in the process of strengthening relations between sub-regions, especially the integration systems representing small and vulnerable economies, which make up almost 75 percent of the membership of the OAS.”
