THE GOVERNMENT OF ITALY PLEDGES OVER €200,000 TO OAS PROJECTS
December 4, 2008
The Government of Italy recently contributed an additional €200,000 to finance OAS programs in the Americas. In a meeting with Secretary General Insulza, Permanent Observer to the OAS, Ambassador Giovanni Castellaneta, highlighted the importance of Italy’s strategic relationship with the Organization, and emphasized the country’s renewed efforts of collaboration by providing funding for the execution of important projects in the Americas.
Of the funds, approximately €111,037 will be directed to the Secretariat for Multidimensional Security’s Department of Public Security for the Office of Humanitarian Mine Action and the Action Against Antipersonnel Mines Program (AICMA). Specifically, €50,000 will finance a project on Landmine Survivor Assistance in Colombia, and €61,037 will be directed to the Rehabilitation and Reintegration of Landmine Survivors in Central America.
Italy is one of the largest Permanent Observer donors to the Action Against Antipersonnel Mines Program, contributing roughly US$310,142 annually since 2000. Secretary General Insulza underscored the positive commitment Italy has made to this important project in the past several years, and called for the country’s continued cooperation in OAS efforts to rid the Americas of antipersonnel landmines, rehabilitate those harmed from antipersonnel mines and create a safe environment for citizens of the region. He emphasized the link between the OAS Action Against Antipersonnel Mines Program to other areas of OAS work, including human rights and sustainable development, and highlighted how the Italian contribution to the AICMA program also benefits these areas in tandem.
The remainder of the contributions will finance work in the areas of human rights and state modernization, respectively. A contribution of €50,000 will be delivered to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights for a project on Promoting and Protecting Human Rights in the Caribbean, and the remaining €40,000 will finance a program on Civil Registry Information Reconstruction and Registration of Populations Affected by the Internal Armed Conflict in Huancavelica, Peru, brought forth by the Secretariat for Political Affairs.
In 2008, Italy has contributed over US$1 million to OAS programs.
