The OAS and the Organizations of the Inter-American System Celebrate International Human Rights Day
December 10, 2012
As part of the celebration of the anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and the Inter-American Institute of Human Rights join to pay tribute to this historic and universal landmark, and reaffirm their commitment to the strengthening of the Inter-American Human Rights System.
This process of strengthening, which began just over a year ago, has been characterized by the broad participation of all stakeholders and has benefited from countless contributions from the unique perspectives that each participant has brought to the dialogue, thereby enriching the vision of the Inter-American Human Rights System.
The dialogues have revealed a consensus among all the stakeholders about the need to direct the process from the point of view of the victims of human rights violations, who are at the System’s heart, and its very reason for existence. It is important to reaffirm that, to achieve adequate and efficient attention to victims, action must take place within a framework of legal certainty and full respect for the autonomy of the organs of the system.
On this significant occasion we the signers renew our commitment to relentless efforts to achieve full respect for, and observance of, the human rights of the inhabitants of the Americas.
