OAS Supports Port Officials of the Americas in Strengthening their Statistical Capacities

  December 2, 2012

The Organization of American States (OAS) through the Inter-American Committee on Ports (CIP) and in conjunction with Peru's National Port Authority (APN), this week held the First Seminar on Port Statistics, an event that is part of the activities of the Technical Advisory Committee of the CIP on Logistics, Innovation and Competitiveness.

At the meeting, held in Lima, Peru between November 29 and 30, more than 100 public and private sector representatives and experts from the Member States Brazil, Ecuador, Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela, in addition to delegates from regional and international organizations such as the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the Central American Commission on Maritime Transport (COCATRAM), the Andean Community (CAN) and the Secretariat of the CIP/OAS took part.

The meeting concluded with the formulation of a proposal for a manual of statistics and port productivity indicators, which will be submitted to CIP authorities for review and approval. The document will allow standardization of methodologies and concepts for the correct handling of statistical information between the Member States of the CIP/OAS and will contribute to the decision making process on issues related to port management.

The Chair of the National Port Authority of Peru Ricardo Schwartzmann led the opening ceremony. The OAS representative in Peru, David Morris, stressed that ports impact the competitiveness of Member States, in that they are a "prerequisite for social inclusion in major economic activities."

The Inter-American Committee on Ports (CIP) is the permanent Inter-American forum at the highest government level on ports, which promotes the strengthening of dialogue, technical and institutional capacities to further cooperation through public-private partnerships in the 34 OAS Member States. The CIP was created in 1956 as the Inter-American Port Conference, and became the Inter-American Commission in 1998.
