OAS Secretary General Congratulates President-Elect of Brazil

  November 2, 2010

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, congratulated the President-Elect of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff, in a letter in which he described last Sunday’s elections as “exemplary elections that reflected the citizens’ democratic calling.”

In his letter, Secretary General Insulza said Rousseff’s election as Brazil’s first female President “constitutes an act of justice and makes democracy more complete and perfect,” adding that the President-Elect’s commitment “to fundamental rights and equality between men and women will mark a new era of prosperity for Brazilians that will allow you to build on the legacy of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, especially on the fight against poverty and for economic stability.”

“I wish to express to you, Madam President-elect, that the OAS will be at your disposal to support you in this effort of building the future you have proposed, in all sectors of Brazilian society, to promote development, social inclusion and the country’s democracy,” the head of the hemispheric Organization added.

In his letter, Insulza underlined the need to defend democracy throughout the continent in the face of diverse threats, among them poverty and discrimination. “Their eradication is essential to strengthen democracy, and as this we know will be one of your priorities, we wish to express to you that in this task you can count on the OAS.”
