IBERO-AMERICAN SUMMIT ENDORSES AND RECOGNIZES OAS ANTI-CORRUPTION MECHANISM

During the XIX Ibero-American Summit that took place in Estoril, Portugal, Heads of State and Government of Ibero-America approved a special communiqué on the fight against corruption where they express a priority in “backing the work of The Mechanism for Follow-Up on the Implementation of the Inter-American Convention against Corruption (MESICIC) of the Organization of American States (OEA), which represents a valuable effort of regional collaboration to prevent and fight the phenomenon of corruption.”

As part of the communiqué, the 22 Ibero-American leaders recognized that corruption “continues to be a menace to social cohesion, making it indispensable to increase cooperation among the countries of the Ibero-American community to strengthen national, regional, and international efforts, to secure the efficiency of methods and actions for preventing, sanctioning and eradicating acts of corruption.”

The Mechanism for Follow-Up on the Implementation of the Inter-American Convention against Corruption (MESICIC) is an inter-governmental instrument established to support the States Parties in the implementation of the provisions of the Convention through a process of reciprocal evaluation, based on conditions of equality among the states. Today the States Parties to the MESICIC are: Argentina, Bahamas, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile, Dominican Republic Ecuador, El Salvador, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, United States, Uruguay and Venezuela.
