OAS SECRETARY GENERAL GREETS COMING INTO FORCE OF LISBON TREATY IN EUROPEAN UNION

  December 2, 2009

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today greeted the coming into force of the Lisbon Treaty, by which the European Union enjoys a new political and judicial organization, a further step towards closer integration of its 27 Member States.

“The Lisbon Treaty coming into force is good news for Europe, but also for the rest of the world. European integration is an example for all countries in the world of how finding and strengthening common interests and simultaneously respecting differences produce economic and social development for their citizens. The difficult path towards ratification of the Lisbon Treaty, similar to ones that have led to other milestones in the European Union, reminds us that such processes require listening to all parts, accommodating sensibilities, overcoming obstacles and, finally, yielding for the common good. I am certain, however, that the future will unfailingly show, as it has in each and every step of the process of European integration, that the idea was well worth it.”
