OAS Highlights Progress on Joint Security Initiative

  October 11, 2012

The Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Ambassador Albert Ramdin, convened a special meeting with regional stakeholders and partners in the international community this week, to recognize the progress made on the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1540.

The Resolution calls on countries to refrain from providing any form of support for the development, acquisition, possession or transfer and use of nuclear, chemical or biological weapons. It also calls on states to adopt and enforce laws prohibiting the manufacture, development and use of these weapons.

The OAS has supported the Resolution for the past six years by working with international partners and Member States to source and provide technical assistance to improve the security environment in the Americas.

According to Assistant Secretary General Ramdin, the Resolution is being implemented with success in the hemisphere with the appointment of two regional coordinators from the subregions of the Caribbean and Central America. The coordinators, who have been working to facilitate technical assistance, have also ensured support to other development and security related projects.

Addressing the gathering, Assistant Secretary General Ramdin pointed to progress made in the Caribbean where increased streams of international funding have supported domestic security and development programs. “We are mitigating conflict in society by creating a new platform to collaborate. Development is a priority for many of our countries, but we cannot have true development without security,” said Ramdin.

Representatives of the international community, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the Central American Integration System (SICA), Ambassadors from OAS Member States and the Ambassador of Finland, joined with the representatives of the Stimson Center and Stanley Foundation - two non profit organizations which focus on international peace and security, for the meeting which took place in Washington, DC.
