OAS to Deploy Nicaraguan Electoral Accompaniment Mission

  October 3, 2012

In response to a request from the government of Nicaragua, the Organization of American States (OAS) will deploy an Electoral Accompaniment Mission (EAM) for the municipal elections to be held on Sunday, November 4, 2012.

OAS Secretary General José Miguel Insulza appointed Lázaro Cárdenas Batel as head of the OAS Electoral Accompaniment Mission in Nicaragua. Cárdenas has ample experience, as the former Governor of the Mexican state of Michoacán, as well as being a former Senator, and a former Federal Deputy. He will formally begin the activities of the Mission with a preliminary visit to Managua, where he will sign an agreement on the procedures of the electoral accompaniment. Cárdenas will also hold various interviews and meetings with electoral, political, and governmental authorities, as well as representatives of national and international community representatives.

The OAS Mission will be present throughout the country on Election Day. The purpose of the OAS/EAM is to support the development of the municipal elections and the various technical aspects of the electoral process, within the framework of the Constitution and the electoral law of the country.

The OAS/EAM will follow up on complaints, uncertainties, or concerns that may arise during the election process and will forward them to the appropriate authorities for processing.
