OAS to Observe Primary Elections in Honduras

  October 1, 2012

The General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (GS/OAS), responding to an invitation from the government of Honduras, will send an Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) to accompany the upcoming primary election, to be held on November 18 this year.

To lead the mission, the OAS Secretary General, José Miguel Insulza, has appointed former Chilean Minister Enrique Correa. Enrique Correa was Spokesman for the Government of Chile between 1990 and 1994. He also served as Director of the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences (FLACSO) at its headquarters in Chile and was a member of its Superior Council. He also worked as a consultant to the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the United Nations Program for Development (UNDP) and the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).

Correa was Chief of the OAS Electoral Observation Missions in Ecuador during the elections of 2007, 2008 and 2009. He also led the Electoral Oversight missions in Colombia in 2010.

Since 1963, the OAS has accompanied and/or observed a total of seven electoral processes in Honduras. For the November elections, the Mission plans to deploy observers in much of the national territory, in order to learn about both the development of the electoral administration and organization and the political campaign.
