OAS Chief of Mission to Colombian Municipal Elections Begins Preliminary Visit

The Chief of Mission of the Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (EOM/OAS) in Colombia, former Guatemalan President Álvaro Colom, today began a preliminary visit to the country ahead of municipal elections to be held on October 25.

During his stay, former President Colom will meet with the President of the National Electoral Council, Emiliano Rivera Bravo, with the National Registrar, Carlos Ariel Sánchez, and with representatives of political parties to learn about progress in the organization of the elections.

The Chief of Mission will also meet with the Minister of the Interior, Juan Fernando Cristo Bustos, and will participate in the meeting of the National Commission for the Coordination and Follow Up of the Electoral Process. He will also meet with the Director of Human Rights and Humanitarian International Rights of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mónica Fonseca Jaramillo, and with the Colombian NGO “Misión de Observación Electoral (MOE)”.

Since 1994, the OAS has observed 13 elections in Colombia, including the legislative and presidential processes of 2014.
