OAS Assistant Secretary General Congratulates Incoming President of Colombia

  August 10, 2010

The Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Ambassador Albert Ramdin, is welcoming the vision statement presented by the new President of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos, following his swearing-in ceremony in Colombia this weekend.

President Santos has expressed a desire to improve the tense relationship between his country and Venezuela following the severing of diplomatic ties a few weeks ago. The Colombian President has also indicated a willingness to foster better relations with all neighboring countries.

Ambassador Ramdin, who represented the OAS in Colombia for the event, has welcomed the vision of the new Colombian President to engage in frank and direct discussions with all his South American neighbors, including his Venezuelan counterpart.

“I believe it is of the utmost importance for neighboring countries to seek peaceful means to resolve their differences. I am very happy with the approach of President Santos, as well as the response from President Chavez, who has agreed to such a meeting in the short term," Ambassador Ramdin stated.

"This is an important time in the Americas. All countries have a responsibility to maintain and foster peace among OAS Member States. If this is not accomplished, social and economic development would be compromised, to the detriment of the people," the OAS Assistant Secretary General added.

The ceremony in Colombia was attended by officials from more than 70 nations, including 17 heads of state and government and heads of international and regional organizations. Ambassador Ramdin also commended President Santos’s pledge to continue the work of his predecessor in addressing issues of poverty, inequity, violence and terrorism, and improving the quality of life of people in Colombia and the hemisphere.
