OAS Secretary General Designates Roberto Menéndez as New Chief of Mission to Support the Peace Process in Colombia

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, designated the Argentine lawyer Roberto Menéndez as the new Chief of the Mission to Support the Peace Process in Colombia (MAPP/OAS), a position he will assume on September 16, 2013.
Menéndez is a lawyer with two specializations and more than 20 years experience in the Organization of American States in the fields of democratic governance, conflict resolution and capacity building in countries like Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Peru, Venezuela, and Central America in general.
Menéndez has also been the Regional Coordinator of the Central American Program for the Strengthening of Democratic Dialogue of the OAS, Assistant General Coordinator of the Culture of Dialogue Program in Guatemala and Chief Operating Officer of the International Commission for Support and Verification (CIAV/OAS) peace mission that the OAS implemented in Nicaragua in the 1990s.
Other highlights of his career include his time as advisor to the MAPP/OAS in 2006 and 2008; his role as the OAS mediator of socio-environmental conflicts in Guatemala in 2006; and his leadership of the OAS technical mission in Bolivia in the Design of the System of Conflict Prevention and Resolution Project in Bolivia in 2003.
The OAS Mission to Support the Peace Process in Colombia was established in 2004 with the aim of supporting the peace process, the verification and monitoring of the government's peace policy and the accompaniment of communities that have been victims of violence. Through the MAPP, the OAS has supported local initiatives in areas of conflict with specific measures, actions and projects aimed at reducing violence, building trust, promoting reconciliation and strengthening democracy.
