OAS Assistant Secretary General Addresses Students on Women in Politics

  August 5, 2010

The Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Albert Ramdin, today addressed students from across the Americas and Europe on the subject of female leadership roles and gender equity, and highlighted the critical role of the OAS in bringing together countries from around the world to jointly discuss such important issues.

“This Organization is about equality and consensus in the Americas. Governments and countries regardless of size are always equally represented in this Council,” he said. “Ultimately the OAS is about strengthening democracy and the rights of people, promoting peace and security and fostering development and prosperity for all in the hemisphere.”

Student interns from the hemisphere and Spain, France, Japan, Norway and the United Kingdom are engaging this week in Model OAS (MOAS) Permanent Council discussions on the participation of women in politics and other leadership roles, key items on the Organization’s agenda.

Approximately 90 interns participated in the eight-week program at OAS headquarters in Washington, DC.

The MOAS is a program of the OAS Department of International Affairs (DAI) designed to promote democracy among the youth of the hemisphere by familiarizing students, faculty and academic institutions of the Americas with the work of the Organization and its Member States. During the program, students engage in an active role-playing exercise in which they assume the positions of diplomats and political officials from the Organization’s Member States.
