VENEZUELA’S NEW OAS ENVOY ADVOCATES A MORE ROBUST HEMISPHERIC
COMMUNITY OF NATIONS
July 17, 2008
Ambassador Roy Chaderton Matos, Venezuela’s new Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States OAS, in presenting credentials to Secretary General José Miguel Insulza today, spoke of his country’s interest in “seeing a stronger sense of inter-American solidarity.”
In presenting his credentials during the ceremony at OAS headquarters, the Venezuelan envoy expressed the view that “every member must make an effort towards strengthening our community of nations for it to become a more diverse and stronger organization with a great future ahead.”
Chaderton pledged his utmost professional, political and personal commitment to collaborating with the other OAS Member States and with the Secretary General in “the endeavor of plurality, perseverance, tenacity, tolerance and understanding to shore up the foundations of democracy in the hemisphere, in pursuit of social justice.”
Receiving the Ambassador’s letters of accreditation, Secretary General Insulza called Chaderton’s appointment as Venezuela’s Permanent Representative to the OAS a demonstration of the pride of place that President Hugo Chavez’ government accords this Organization.
“In the years since I have been Secretary General, this organization has been fortunate enough to have the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in active, meaningful and ongoing participation in all of the OAS’ activities. We have therefore enjoyed full and open support from your country with respect to all the priorities we have been pursuing. Consequently, we have developed stronger bonds of friendship and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela has developed a stronger sense of belonging to this Organization. We want to place this on record,” Insulza went on to state.
The Secretary General also hailed the contribution to the OAS by the outgoing Alternate Representative of Venezuela, Ambassador Nelson Pineda Prada, who was also in attendance at the ceremony. Pineda was recently appointed as his country’s ambassador to Costa Rica.
During his long diplomatic career, Chaderton has held a variety of positions in his country’s Foreign Service, serving among other things as Ambassador in Colombia, in France and in Mexico. He was also Venezuela’s Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2002 to 2004.
