OAS Secretary General Congratulates Colombian President-Elect

  June 20, 2010

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, sends his greetings to the government of President Álvaro Uribe, President-Elect Juan Manuel Santos and the people of Colombia on today's Election Day. The head of the OAS called Santos to wish him success in his future task as President of the country.

Secretary General Insulza considers the development of the electoral process as a great achievement by the Colombian people. He regrets, however, military and civilian deaths today in incidents not directly related to the election.

The OAS has deployed an Electoral Observation Mission with more than 80 international observers from 23 countries of the Americas and Europe. The Mission arrived in Colombia on February 20th with the goal of following the legislative elections in March and the presidential elections of May 20th, including today's second round.
