OAS SECRETARY GENERAL MET WITH OPPOSITION MEMBERS OF THE VENEZUELAN CONGRESS

  July 31, 2009

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, met Friday with a group of Members of the Venezuelan Opposition in Congress, who had requested an audience to present several political issues.

The delegation included Congressmen Ismael García, Juan José Molina and Wilmer Azuaje, as well as Ambassador Milos Alcalay, who served as the Permanent Representative of Venezuela to the United Nations between 2001 and 2004.

The head of the OAS listened to the delegation and highlighted the role played by the opposition in any democracy. “We must stress the importance of minorities within parliaments. Opposition is an essential element of democracy,” he said.

Secretary General Insulza stressed to the delegation his interest in having a fair balance between powers within a democracy, and reminded them that he proposed in the past that the judicial and legislative powers, and not only the executive branch, should also be able to call on the OAS.

The OAS leader also emphasized that Human Rights issues are already being dealt with by the appropriate institutions within the OAS.
