OAS SECRETARY GENERAL PRESENTS THE REPORT OF THE VERIFICATION COMMISSION TO THE GOVERNMENTS OF ECUADOR AND COLOMBIA

  July 30, 2009

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, held today a meeting with President Rafael Correa Delgado and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fander Falconí. During the meeting, Insulza presented to the Government of Ecuador, the report of the visit to Ecuador and Colombia of the Verification Commission of the OAS Good Offices Mission, to promote the understanding and normalize the bilateral relations between the two countries.

The document contains proposals on the area of cross-border trade, suggests the establishment of a mechanism to foster mutual confidence, and offers a more permanent presence of the hemispheric institution in the border.

The report was also presented by Secretary General Insulza to the President of Colombia, Álvaro Uribe Vélez, during a meeting that took place in the framework of the XI Summit of the Mechanism of Dialogue and Concertation of Tuxtla in Guanacaste, Costa Rica.

The efforts undertaken by the leader of the hemispheric institution respond to the mandate of the OAS Twenty Fifth Meeting of Consultation of Ministers of Foreign Affairs, held on March 17th, 2008, which urged him to “use his good offices to implement a mechanism for the restoration of an atmosphere of trust” between the two countries.
