Message from Secretary General Almagro on the Passing of the Ambassador of Venezuela to the OAS, Bernardo Alvarez
November 26, 2016
Today I must express my deepest sadness upon the passing of the Permanent Representative of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to the Organization of American States (OAS), Ambassador Bernardo Alvarez.
Ambassador Alvarez was an extraordinarily capable diplomat but above that he was a good person, who always acted with the most admirable public decency and the deepest sense of duty.
We should all praise his demonstrated commitment to his political commitments that did not blind him but on the contrary showed him the path to action, tirelessly and without pause.
He had a profound sense of social justice of what politics should do for the poor and the most dispossessed. His cause was that of all of the Americas, the most unequal continent of all.
I will always consider the strength shown by Ambassador Alvarez to seek dialogue and consensus, acting with deep respect for his own responsibilities and those of others as exemplary.
The more difficult a negotiation or a political situation, the more we could count on his intellectual vigor and his gift with people.
