Guatemala to Host OAS General Assembly's Forty-third Regular Session in 2013

  June 5, 2012

The forty-third regular session of the OAS General Assembly will be held in Antigua, Guatemala, from June 4 to 6, 2013. The representatives of the member states adopted the decision by acclamation on the final day of the Assembly session in Cochabamba.

In welcoming the hemispheric forum to his country, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guatemala, Harold Caballeros, announced, “Guatemala ratifies its unconditional commitment to the inter-American system and to our Organization, which has stood by the country and the Central American region on historic occasions, such as Guatemala’s return to democracy in 1986 and the signing of the Peace Accords in 1996.”

Foreign Minister Caballeros said that receiving the OAS was “consistent with the foreign-policy priorities” of Guatemalan president, Otto Pérez Molina, “who has instructed us to make every effort in assisting the system with the concerns under its responsibility.”

Guatemala has hosted the OAS General Assembly before—in 1986 and in 1999—, on both occasions in Guatemala City.
