OAS OFFERS SUPPORT TO THE ARGENTINE SUPREME COURT OF JUSTICE TO HOLD THE FIRST JUDICIAL CONFERENCE OF THE AMERICAS

During a meeting that took place today at the Headquarters of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington D.C., the President of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Argentine Republic, Ricardo Lorenzetti, and the OAS Secretary General, José Miguel Insulza discussed various issues of regional interest, including: the economic and financial crisis and its impact on the region, the current political system and the importance of citizen participation, and the strengthening of the judicial power in OAS member states.

The President of the Argentine Supreme Court of Justice announces d that they are organizing the Judicial Conference of the Americas that will be held in Buenos Aires in September, 2009. Chief Justice Lorenzetti said that the Conference will be attended by Court representatives from all over the region, who will debate issues related to the overall concept of rule of law, including: Supreme Courts management, efficacy of the judicial power, institutional strengthening, separation of powers, and budgetary issues. In this sense, the OAS Secretary General offered institutional support to an initiative that he considered “positive and valuable.”

Lorenzetti affirmed that this Conference will be significant, because “representatives of judicial power will have the opportunity to analyze the current state of the rule of law, its needs, and the ways to make it stronger and more efficient.”

Secretary General Insulza reiterated that “we are interested in developing a relationship between the OAS and the legislative and judicial powers of member states” and stressed the OAS experience in this area and in following on ministerial meetings He also made available the technical tools that the OAS has developed in this area to the Conference organizers.

The Permanent Representative of Argentina to the OAS, Ambassador Rodolfo Gil, and the OAS Secretary for Legal Affairs, Jean Michel Arrighi also attended the meeting.
