Preliminary Visit of the OAS Electoral Observation Mission in Colombia

  April 29, 2014

The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States in Colombia, headed by former Costa Rican President José María Figueres Olsen, is visiting the country to learn about the progress made in the organization of the upcoming presidential elections of May 25.

The Mission, which will begin its final deployment ten days before Election Day, is made up of a group of 53 experts and observers from 17 member states and observer countries to the OAS. The work of observation will include an integral analysis of fundamental issues in the election such as electoral organization and technology, campaign financing, electoral security, conflict resolution and the vote abroad.

During its stay in Colombia, the Mission has held meetings with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Relations, Patti Londoño Jaramillo; the Interior Minister, Aurelio Iragorri Valencia; the Civil Registrar, Carlos Ariel Sánchez Torres; the Chair of the National Electoral Council, Pablo Gil de la Hoz; as well as presidential candidates and representatives of political parties. It is worth noting that, in its meetings with the candidates, the Mission has heard some concerns related to the organization of the process.

The Mission values the efforts made by the National Civil Registry and the National Electoral Council in the organization and administration of this election. Moreover, the Mission believes it is important that any petitions presented by the candidates should be attended and resolved promptly in order to promote a climate of trust.

Finally, the Mission invites citizens to make an effort to get to know the proposals presented by the various candidates in order to be able to make an informed decision about who will be the next President of the Republic. Their participation as voters, as well as any other role in the context of this process, will contribute to the strengthening of democracy in the country.
