Visit of the OAS Electoral Observation Mission to Colombia

The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) to Colombia will begin on Monday a visit to the country in order to gather information regarding the organization of the upcoming Presidential elections that will be held on May 25.

As part of the visit, the Chief of Mission, former Costa Rican President José María Figueres Olsen, appointed by the Secretary General of the OAS, José Miguel Insulza, will meet with various electoral and governmental authorities, and presidential candidates.

Since 1994, the OAS has observed or been present in a total of eleven elections in the country. On this opportunity, the Mission will also carry out a comprehensive observation of the process considering aspects such as electoral organization and technology, campaign financing, electoral security, resolution of disputes and voting from abroad.

As in previous opportunities, upon completion of its work, the Mission will present a report to the Permanent Council of the Organization in which it will outline observations and recommendations in order to contribute to the improvement of the Colombian electoral system.
