OAS Participated in Granting of Award to Ecuadorian Company for the Quality and Innovation of its Products
March 26, 2013
The Organization of American States (OAS), with the Coordinating Ministry of Production, Employment and Competitiveness (MCPEC) of Ecuador, participated in the delivery of the first "Cradle to Cradle" (C2C) certification to a company in Latin America and the Caribbean. The award, which recognizes manufacturing practices that meet high standards of quality and environmental care, was awarded to Battery Alimentos SA.
The Ecuadorian company received the certification because its production practices are consistent with C2C international standards and because it uses environmentally friendly inputs in its processes. This mode of production combines the promotion of energy efficiency, non-use of harmful chemicals and the use of recyclable materials.
The OAS Executive Secretary for Integral Development, Sherry Tross, noted the importance of celebrating efforts to deploy innovative business approaches that lead to enhanced competitiveness and increased sustainability. “We must continue to encourage even more creativity, innovation and commitment so that such initiatives that fuel economic growth and environmental protection become more widespread in our Hemisphere”, she said.
The MCPEC Deputy Minister, Munir Massuh said the “Closed Looped Cycle Production in the Americas” (CLCP) initiative, which develops an innovative tool by promoting the reuse of inputs in industrial production cycles, to generate an improvement in energy efficiency and to reduce environmental impact. "The application of this tool will allow the business development of MSMEs, leading to increased productivity, competitiveness and the generation of economic resources by reducing energy costs," said Massuh.
The CLCP in the Americas is an initiative conducted under the framework of the Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA). The MCPEC and OAS are key implementing partners of the program. Other implementing institutions include C2C Lab Expo, the Cleaner Production Centre of Colombia and McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry, together with local partners and suppliers Batery Alimentos SA, NEYPLEX and Gráfico Centro.
