OAS PAYS TRIBUTE TO FORMER PRESIDENT OF GUYANA JANET JAGAN

  April 1, 2009

The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) expressed on Wednesday its condolences to the people and Government of Guyana for the recent decease of former President Janet Rosenberg Jagan. Ms. Jagan passed away on Saturday, March 28, at Georgetown Hospital. She was 88 years old.

“Ms. Jagan played a relevant role on the development of Guyana, and received several distinctions, among them the Order of Excellence (the highest national award in Guyana), and the Gandhi Gold Medal for Culture of Peace. In 1997 she made history by becoming the first woman President of Guyana”, remembered her the President of the Permanent Council and Ambassador of Canada to the OAS, Graeme Clark.

The Permanent Representatives of the 34 Member States of the Organization of American States (OAS) observed a minute of silence as a tribute to the President of Guyana between 1997 and 1999.

The Secretary General of the OAS, José Miguel Insulza, highlighted former President Jagan’s important role in the democratic development of Guyana, and stressed the fact that she was the first woman in South America to be elected to the highest office in her country.

The Permanent Representative of Guyana to the OAS, Ambassador Bayney R. Karran, also mentioned Janet Jagan’s political trajectory, who besides being President was also married to former President Cheddi Jagan, widely recognized as the “father of the Guyanese nation”, was Prime Minister, Minister of Labor and Minister of Health, among other relevant offices held serving the South American nation.

“Her contribution to the development of Guyana was profound”, said the diplomat, who confirmed he would communicate “personally” to the people and the Government of his country the condolences expressed by the OAS Permanent Council. Many delegations later expressed their sorry for the passing away of former President Jagan, known in her country as “The Freedom Fighter”.
