OAS ASSISTANT SECRETARY GENERAL MEETS WITH
U.S CONGRESSMAN JIM OBERSTAR
March 31, 2008
The Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Albert R. Ramdin, met with United States Congressman Jim Oberstar
(D-MN), today to exchange views on the current political, social, and economic, situation in Haiti, as well as a number of hemispheric issues of common interest.
During the meeting, which took place in the Congressman’s office on Capitol Hill, Assistant Secretary General Ramdin briefed the Congressman on the positive progress recently achieved in the Caribbean nation and outlined key areas where assistance is still critical including; support for fighting drug-trafficking, border control, bolstering the tourism industry, economic recovery and increasing Haiti’s capacity to respond to natural disasters.
“Today, Haiti is not a country in crisis; it is a country that needs international help to help it meet its sustainable development goals,” the Assistant Secretary General said, as he pointed out the most important elements of that country’s National Strategy for Growth and Poverty Reduction Plan.
Congressman Oberstar, the Chairman of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure which has jurisdiction over the nation’s surface transportation, international maritime commerce, and the Economic Development Administration among other key issues, noted that the assessment provided by the Assistant Secretary General were “the first positive signs in years,” emerging from Haiti and underscored the need to continue moving ahead to capitalize on the environment.
The Congressman was particularly interested in an upcoming Coast Guard authorization Bill which will include training and the donation of a number of vessels to Haiti, which he noted will help strengthen its security, and support the fight against illegal trade and drug trafficking.
The Assistant Secretary General and a delegation of OAS Permanent Representatives will participate on a members-only briefing on April 9th, to continue discussing the situation in Haiti.
