OAS SECRETARY GENERAL DENOUNCES ASSASSINATION OF ANTIOQUIA GOVERNOR, FORMER DEFENSE MINISTER AND OTHERS IN COLOMBIA

  May 5, 2003

Denouncing the assassination of Antioquia Governor Guillermo Gaviria, former Defense Minister Gilberto Echeverri Mejía and several soldiers kidnapped by Colombian guerrillas, the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), César Gaviria, has described the murders as “a cowardly crime in which FARC guerrillas have deprived Colombia of outstanding men whose commitment to peace and service set them apart throughout their lifetime.”

Gaviria issued a statement from Montreal, Canada, where is on official mission, expressing solidarity and condolences to the families of the victims. He said “the assassination of exemplary public officials who were great Colombians and exceptional human beings clearly shows that FARC totally lacked humanitarian feeling and regard for human life.”

On behalf of the OAS’ 34 member states, the Secretary General also conveyed sympathy to Colombian President Alvaro Uribe, stressing that “there should be no doubt whatsoever that the assassins are seeking to undermine our confidence in the democratic system and in the values of respect for human life—values that uphold our society.”

Mr. Gaviria urged Colombians to now “rally around the President and Colombia’s democratic institutions as never before and to unequivocally condemn kidnappings and all terrorist practices.”
