OAS ASSISTANT SECRETARY GENERAL BRIEFS BRITISH PERMANENT OBSERVER
April 9, 2007
Ongoing efforts by the Organization of American States (OAS) to facilitate dialogue and resolution between Belize and Guatemala, as well as preparations for the upcoming OAS General Assembly were in the spotlight today, as OAS Assistant Secretary General Albert R. Ramdin received the British Permanent Observer, Ambassador Alan Charlton.
During their meeting, at OAS headquarters in Washington, the Assistant Secretary General and the British envoy discussed possibilities for further British assistance, in particular for the OAS’ efforts in the Belize-Guatemala program, especially in the Adjacency Zone. Among other initiatives, Ambassador Ramdin said the OAS-affiliated Pan-American Development Foundation (PADF) would be asked to explore setting up a program in the Belize-Guatemala border region to generate economic and other activities, similar to a project the Foundation is operating on the Dominican Republic-Haiti border. He said that it is in the interest of everyone that the Belize-Guatemala differences be resolved as soon as possible as those issues hinder prospects for real progress in terms of integration.
In his overview of hemispheric developments and the organization’s role in providing support to member states, Ramdin also made mention of the OAS assistance to strengthen the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) and strengthen the functioning of that country’s Parliament. On the General Assembly, he told the British envoy that preparations are going well for the OAS gathering of the hemisphere’s foreign ministers in Panama City in early June, under the theme of “Energy for Sustainable Development.”
For his part, Ambassador Charlton expressed his government’s interest in further assistance for the Western Hemisphere organization. He expressed particular interest in the focus of the upcoming OAS General Assembly session, noting that energy has enormous implications for energy security and climate change, which are among the issues that his Prime Minister has been championing.
