OAS/EOM in El Salvador continues its work in the final counting of votes

  March 11, 2014

The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) of the second round of the presidential election held on March 9, 2014, respectful of the legal and institutional framework of El Salvador, called on all Salvadoran political actors and institutions to preserve peace and to wait until the Supreme Electoral Tribunal concludes the procedure established by law, delivers the final results and proclaims the election winner.

Maintaining peace is the best contribution that can be made, in these circumstances, to the stability of the exemplary Salvadoran democracy.

In this regard, the OAS/EOM wishes to emphasize that the work of the Mission will continue throughout the final counting process. The Mission will be present with a team that has already been formed and installed in El Salvador, comprised of the Deputy Chief of the Mission, Cristóbal Fernández; the Director of the OAS Department for Electoral Cooperation and Observation, Gerardo de Icaza; and a group of experts of the Organization.

The OAS observers will witness the various phases of the final count. Any noticeable event, as well as the results will be incorporated to the verbal report to be presented to the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States, and in the subsequent final report of the Mission that will be submitted to the Salvadoran authorities.
